The American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary is a century-old organization dedicated to serving, educating, and advocating for veterans and their families. Comprised of male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion, the ALA stands as a pillar of support within more than 8,000 local communities in the USA and abroad. Founded in 1919 during the inaugural National Convention of The American Legion, the ALA has since become one of the largest veterans' support organizations, carrying out its mission with steadfast dedication.

With a focus on the core values of Service Not Self, the ALA is committed to making a difference for those who have served and sacrificed for their country. Department President

Department President Kim Mellie (2025-2026)
Department President Kim Mellie (2025-2026)

Kim Mellie has been a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 2018. She is eligible through both her father, Audel Tucker, a World War II Veteran, and her husband, Frank Mellie Jr., a Coast Guard Veteran.

Her journey with the Auxiliary began at Mountaineer Unit 174 in Morgantown, as the 5 members needed help.  This is where she developed a deep passion for the mission and values of  the organization. She later transferred to Shinnston Unit 31, a personal decision that allowed her to continue helping and growing in leadership while remaining a loyal supporter of her original unit. Shinnston Unit 31 has been extremely supportive and has become a family to her.  Not to mention they are very active in their efforts to help Veterans and serve the community.

Kim has held numerous positions at all levels of the organization. At the Unit level, she has served as President, Sergeant-at-Arms, Americanism Chair, and Junior Activities Chair. At the District level, she served as Third District Vice President and President. She has also served in key Department roles, including Historian, Chaplain, Second Vice President, and First Vice President. Her commitment extends to multiple committee appointments and chairmanships, including Education and Legislative.

Professionally, Kim has worked in education for 34 years and is currently employed by the West Virginia State Board of Education. She is a passionate educator who has earned multiple awards and continues to dedicate herself to nurturing young minds.

Kim and her husband of 31 years, Frank, have four children—Kimmie, Heather, Gabbie, and Victoria (Tori)—and four grandchildren: Jiovanni, Ava, Nico, and Oaklee. She values time with family, especially their cherished Sunday dinners.

A native of Charleston, Kim moved to Morgantown to attend West Virginia University, where she earned her master's degree. She has called Morgantown home ever since.
